Call for Contributions in a Workshop on International Migration from the Horn of Africa to the Sudan and from there Onwards

Purpose

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together scholars from Sudan, neighboring Ethiopia, and Eritrea and from German Institutions of Research and Higher Education interested in the issues with

Aim

The aim of the workshop is to create an International Research Network

Background: Framework for a Research Network on Migration Following the Sudanese German Forum on Academic Cooperation

The Sudan has a long history of population movements and migration but recently it has emerged as the most important hub of migration in the Horn of Africa.

As a result of the deliberations during the Sudanese German Forum on Scientific Research and Academic Cooperation 7 to 9 March 2016 and following the recommendations of the forum to collaborate in social science research, a considerable number of interested scholars have met at the premises of the Ministry of Higher Education on 10 March to discuss ways of establishing cooperation in research on migration.

The meeting agreed that

- migration and population movements in and through the Sudan have become a source for important spatial and social issues which are of immediate concern for a wide range of administrative bodies
- moreover, migration has developed into a common issue shared by a number of countries including the Sudan and those of the European Union
- and, finally, that migration research lends itself to various academic perspectives and hence academic cooperation across a wide range of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities .
The meeting further agreed to establish a Sudanese-German research network of scholars interested in collaboration in migration research. Although various types of migration and population movements – ranging from pastoral movements and rural-urban migration to the recent immigration of Syrian refugees – may be found in the Sudan, the meeting agreed to concentrate on the most important types of migration for the time being. We therefore propose, to begin with, to concentrate on

three different streams of migration

namely,
1. international migration from the Horn of Africa to the Sudan and from there onwards
2. internal migration
3. migration between the Sudan and the neighboring countries, South Sudan in particular
4. labour migration from the Sudan abroad.
Further, we propose to organize several workshops each one addressing one of the themes mentioned above, the first workshop on international migration from the Horn of Africa and onwards to be organized by and held in the

Center for Refugees , Migration & Development Studies, Faculty of Community Development, University of Gadarif, on 27 to 30 of November 2016.

Date and place of the following workshops are still open and scholars interested in these issues are encouraged to take the lead in organizing workshops. For the workshop in Gadarif invitations shall also be extended to the north Ethiopian universities to attend as guests and possible partners in cooperation. The purpose of these workshops is to discuss and evaluate research proposals and to organize them into a program structure which is feasible for external funding.

Following the recommendations of the Sudanese German Forum on Scientific Research and Academic Cooperation hosted at the premises of the Ministry of Higher Education of The Sudan in March this year the University of Gadarif will host a workshop on the subject of International Migration from the Horn of Africa to the Sudan and from there onwards

The issue of international migration from the Horn of Africa to and through the Sudan and from the Sudan onwards has given cause for widely shared administrative and scholarly concern . The purpose of the workshop is to bring together scholars from Sudan, neighboring Ethiopia, Eritrea and from German Institutions of Research and Higher Education interested in the issues with the aim of creating an International Research Network.

Scholars in the whole range of relevant disciplines who are interested in cooperation are invited to develop research proposals which can be discussed and evaluated at the workshop with the ultimate aim of organizing individual proposals into a program structure which is feasible for external funding.

The workshop will be convened from 27-30 Nov 2016 at main campus (TWAWA) in the University of Gadarif. We also hope to organize an excursion to the border.
